Constraints facing goat-keepers and ways of addressing them through a participatory aaproach: some experiences from semi-arid India

This document is a progress report on a joint BAIF Development Research Foundation (India)/NRI (National Resources Institute, UK) applied research project that has been seeking to identify and address feed-related constraints affecting goat production in semi-arid India. It summarises the work done and the progress made in Bhilwara, Udaipur (both in Rajastan) and Bhanagar (in Gujarat) from 1997- 99. The three-year project continued until 2000, and was funded by the Livestock Production Programme of DFID (Department for International Development, UK).

Factors influencing the inititation and effectiveness of community forest management: a discussion of hypotheses and experiences in Orissa

This report is an output from a research project on self-initiated forest management in Orissa, India, that was managed by the natural Resources Institute (UK). The research study was aimed at examining factors influencing the effectiveness of community forest management (CFM). A survey was undertaken in 43 forest-dependent communities which had initiated forest protection. The main survey methods used were semi-structured interviews, combined with transect walks and various participatory mapping and diagramming techniques.

Participatory situation analysis with livestock keepers: a guide

This guide is intended to assist people involved in aspects of livestock research and development. It presents outputs from a goat research project that is working with agro-pastoralists in parts of semi-arid India, particularly in Rajasthan. The project's main focus is on understanding and addressing seasonal feed security for goats, through a participatory approach. The general approach for analysing situations was semi-structured interviews, combined with various visual techniques.

Participatory technology development with livestock keepers: a guide

This guide is intended to help researchers and livestock-keepers to design and conduct participatory experiments that lead to the development of effective technologies that will benefit resource-poor farmers. The guide draws on the experiences of a goat research project in semi-arid India by BAIF Development Research Foundation and the Natural Resources Institute, whose focus has been on easing seasonal feed scarcity, and was conducted over a four-year period (1998-2001).
