Thinking critically about photovoice: Achieving empowerment and social change
Photovoice, a community-based participatory action research method, emerged in the early 1990s to empower participants, particularly women in rural China, by addressing their health and socioeconomic needs. This article reviews the theory and application of photovoice, discussing contemporary critiques related to power imbalances, research rigor, participant engagement, and the effective dissemination of findings. The reflection aims to enhance the understanding and implementation of photovoice, ensuring it serves its intended purpose of promoting empowerment and social change.
