One in a series of eight complementary documents developed for people interested in assessing sustainability. This volume is to be used together with "Assessing Rural Sustainability". These two documents describe a method of system assessment for use by field teams and rural communities working together. It uses and adapts well known participatory tools for community participation.

Used in a participatory way, video can be a powerful tool which allows group members to examine the world around them, gain awareness of the situation and become more actively involved in decisions which affect them.  Through hands-on use of the equipment they develop the confidence to speak for themselves, and they access a means of communicating their ideas by working creatively together to record their own videos.   Based on an innovative approach researched over twelve years, this book sets out a programme for group leaders working with a variety of participants including people with disabilities, women, young and older people and people recovering from mental ill-health, in settings such as day centres, schools and colleges, hospitals and community venues.  It features over 60 exercises, explaining clearly the procedure to follow, the time needed and the value of each activity.
