The method and processes used in a piece of participatory research by ten street children to identify the problems of street children are outlined. The children selected the research topic, the methodology to be used, analysed their findings and proposed recommendations.
Participatory impact assessment : a report on a DFID funded ActionAid research project on methods and indicators for measuring the impact of poverty reduction.
Review of the background, methodology and key findings of an applied three year research project designed to find more reliable participatory impact approaches and locally relevant indicators of change. Different methods for the assessment of impact were tried out with a wide range of communities and local organisations that ActionAid had previous direct contact with. Major findings of the research include the need for field workers to be more selective in their use of participatory techniques, the importance of tracking long term changes in peoples' key indicators and the need for NGO's to support an 'impact assessment culture' in all that they do and the systems that they follow.
Community assessment and planning for maternal and child health programs : a particpatory approach in Ethiopia
Summary report of a community health needs assessment carried out in five communities in Ethiopia. Government health staff and community members were involved in identifying and prioritising maternal and child health problems and planning for actions to help solve them. A limited number of maternal and child health behaviours that are critical to the prevention and management of the most important causes of childhood morbidtiy and mortality were used as a focus to guide planning. An integrated household survey was then used to measure the indicators of those behaviours.
Pamphlet reporting on the method and findings of a research activity selected and undertaken by children in Dhaka. The key findings include mistreatment and misbehaviour by adults, undesirable jobs, lack of trust by employers, marriage problems for girls, uncertain future, poor income, disrespect, injustice and lack of access to education. Brief report on the methodology and findings of a research project carried out to examine the impact of HIV/AIDS on the lives of children on a commercial farm. The coping mechanisms used by families and children of both AIDs and non-AIDs affected families were investigated and also the pathways of vulnerability to HIV/AIDs infection. The roles of eduation, the AIDS awareness campaigns and economic insecurity in increasing vulnerability were considered.
